Interesting. An hour ago, I was rewatching your interview with Fred Litwin. I've read your books about the Kennedy and the King assassinations, but I have not read the book, "A Cruel and Shocking Act." I know it is about Oswald and Mexico City, but that's all I know about it. What do you think of it?

Also, isn't it true that on the afternoon of November 22, the FBI's station chief was ordered to burn a document, and did?

I was fascinated by the KGB officer's claim that Oswald told them he had tried to infiltrate an anti - Castro group in Dallas. That would explain the Sylvia Odio matter.

I had never read about Oswald's behavior in Mexico City. Over the years, I had evolved my own hypothesis that as his ace in trying to cajole the Cubans into letting him defect, Oswald might have told the officers at the Cuban Embassy about his attempt to kill Edwin Walker, hoping in doing so to convince them of his devotion to the revolution.

Here's my own spook scenario: they certainly weren't going to let him defect, but I have wondered if they might have realized they had a potentially valuable lunatic on their hands, told him that the Kennedys were trying to kill Comrade Fidel, and though, of course, they could under no circumstances ever acknowledge him, if, perchance, Comrade Lee ever got the chance to kill the Imperialist pig, Kennedy, and did it, he would have the historic gratitude of Comrade Fidel. They would then have sent him on his way with perhaps a 2% expectancy that they might have planted a seed which could take root.

A Cruel and Shocking Act is well worth reading.

Some journalists I respect believe that the Cubans somehow encouraged Oswald to do something that he was sincere about helping Castro’s revolution. We are unlikely ever to find out - the Cubans have never provided access to real intel about Oswald’s time in Mexico City

I know you weren't asking me, but A Cruel and Shocking Act is an excellent book. It's not only about Mexico City--there is also a lot of original reporting about the Warren Commission's work.

The release of the last batch of files sadly will only fuel the Kennedy assassination cottage industry for another half century.

My father David Belin was one of eight staff attorneys on the Warren Commission. I remember him saying that while Oswald was being interrogated, he told the truth about inconsequential things and lied about everything that was material (e.g. owning the rifle, using the alias A.J. Hidell). He did lie about his trip to Mexico City.

I'd bet things like this could still happen today.

Last years attempts on Trump show how inept they can be. Just dumb luck that the sniper wasn't successful.

He came within a quarter inch and that was only because Trump turned his head at the last second.

I’m not familiar with your work Mr Posner. But it seems your analysis is that Oswald shot Kennedy and out of that has hatched hundreds of “conspiracy theories”. I’ve read several books on the assassination and unlike you I was alive and experienced it all and what it did to the country. You have to discount eye witness testimony, Zapruder film, magic bullet theory, utter failure of Warren Commission with the chief fox Allen Dulles guarding the chicken coop, bungled ‘managed’ autopsy, findings in ER at Parkland, CIA, FBI,USSS lying and prevarication, relationship of Mafia to CIA and various powerful politicians including the Kennedys. This is off the top of my head, there’s so much more. There is literally no way physically that Oswald using that crummy rifle and scope that he could have hit his target three times and that was demonstrated in recreations and he wasn’t a top marksman in the USMC. Finally, for those of us alive on that terrible Friday and all weekend, WE WANT TO KNOW WHO KILLED THE PRESIDENT AND WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE!!

This is a very well written and thoughtful article which points from Gerald Posner’s Case Closed what CIA and FBI may have known and not known about Oswald (unhinged) in Mexico. Based on what Gerald‘s investigation circa 1992, there is clearly a lack of concrete evidence with flimsy CIA reporting and nothing regarding “missing” transcripts of any taped conversations of Oswald with Soviet and Cuban officials. We’ll never know what actually happened but there is close enough information. What’s missing is the finer details including whether CIA passed on anything to FBI. Since they hate each other with their stupid rivalry IMHO that answer is at best maybe but most likely no. Are we going to get that out of this next release? I’ll be shocked if we do.
