The Last Nazi reported dead in Syria
Today's NYT reports that ''The Last Nazi,' Alois Brunner, died in Syria four years ago. I tried repeatedly to interview him during the late 1980s when a German professor I had met was in touch with the fugitive war criminal. He was then in Damascus, safe since the end of the war in exchange for helping the Assad dictatorship train its secret police. Once the Mossad sent him a package packed with explosives but it only managed to mangle his hands, but not kill him.
He was an unrepentant Nazi until the end. Good riddance.
